Got Stress? Feeling Burnt Out? Consider an MTHFR Deficiency.

What comes to mind when you think of the word ‘gene mutation’? While some people may think of sci-fi or superheroes, the reality is that some genetic mutations are actually quite common. They can happen over a lifetime as cells age, some of us are born with them, and some are influenced by our environment.

In fact, scientists have recently been able to detect a gene mutation that close to 59% of people have called MTHFR (or Methyl Tetra HydroFolate Reductase…thank goodness for the abbreviation) mutation. With this mutation, it means that body is not able to take folic acid from food and convert it into a useable (methylated) form. The methylated form is necessary for the adrenals to work, to make energy and so many other body and brain functions. Don’t worry, we have a solution for you!

Why Should You Care?

You like having energy, don’t you? Folic acid (otherwise known as vitamin B9), is required to make energy, digest, and metabolize food, and is also a nutrient that is crucial for women’s health. When a woman becomes pregnant, a lack of folic acid can lead to serious illness for the baby, such as spina bifida and other lifelong problems. It is THE main reason women of childbearing age need to be on a prenatal vitamin. This nutrient is also important for Adrenal function — we’ve all heard of adrenal burnout, right? With all these extremely important functions, I hope you see why it’s essential to have an adequate dose of the proper form of (methylated) folic acid.

What is Adrenal Burnout?

Adrenal burnout, also known as adrenal fatigue, is a phenomenon that occurs when we’re exhausted. It usually happens when we have a period of stress, we overdo it, maybe we party too hard or work too much. If your weeks usually consist of busy workdays, a busy home life, an active brain, or simply feeling as though you always have a long list of to-do’s, adrenal support is a must!

The adrenal glands are responsible for producing the stress hormone, cortisol. It’s important to note that we do need some cortisol to maintain living a healthy life. But, what happens when we are stressed is we are constantly overproducing cortisol and the adrenal glands who make cortisol become ‘tired’, ‘fatigued’, or simply…burnt out. I believe we can all agree on how easy that seems with our fast-paced busy lives. Think of this scenario: we have to exercise 1 hour a day to stay alive, but something happened and our body started working out 24/7…I think we can agree that we’d all be exhausted and ‘burnt out’. This is what can happen to the adrenals. The B vitamins are in high demand during these times of stress, and making sure that the adrenals have all the resources they need will make sure your bases are covered! We don’t want to rust, right? After all, burnt-out adrenals leads to hormone issues such as infertility and hot flashes — and I don’t want to forget ‘weight gain’!

I feel confident to say that 99% of people I know can easily benefit from taking more B vitamins. If you’re going to take one, it might as well have folic acid in the methylated form so that, even if you’ve never been tested for the genetic mutation, you’ll feel confident your bases are covered and you’ll be able to carry out your day with a solid foundation! At Julie E Health, we have a couple of our favorite B’s BOTH with METHYLATED forms of folic acid that can be used by babies, children, and adults alike.
